How to know what makes your small business different from competitors

If you want to know what it is that makes you different, ask your current clients.

Often you have no idea how much they appreciate the little things you do.

Recently we did some marketing strategy work for a remodeling contractor who swore up and down his key point of difference was quality craftsmanship.

When we spoke with a number of his past clients they all told us that they loved how his crew communicated throughout the project until completion. Remember it’s not a differentiator unless the client says it is!

This is another example of what I mean by finding a unique point of difference that matters to your ideal clients. Quality craftsmanship was not it, communication was.

I hope you see from that case study above that there are clearly two parts to this.

First, you must talk with your past clients who are ideal, and second, you must be able to spot what you do that actually differentiates you from your competition.

You want to look for words and phrases and actual experiences that keep coming up over and over again, no matter how insignificant they may seem to you.
