Is Talking To Your Clients A Good Idea?

As a small business marketing consultant, I always recommend interviewing our client’s client as a starting point to effective marketing.⠀

It is the best way to improve your business, gain a better understanding of your differentiation, and even bring you referrals.⠀

So is talking to your clients a good idea? I think you know the answer. ⠀

But often here’s the objection I get, “I already know my clients.” It’s unlikely that you will learn anything we don’t already know about our clients, competitors, or marketplace.⠀

My response is always not as well as you might think. True, you very likely do know a lot about your clients, their businesses, and your competitors. But that knowledge is all from your perspective, not your clients. ⠀

What kind of questions should you ask customers? There’s no limit — it can be any that would help you get better and plug sales and marketing gaps. Get started with these 5 questions:⠀

Why did you decide to hire us or buy from us initially?⠀
What’s the one thing we should never stop doing?⠀
What’s one thing we could do to create a better experience for you?⠀
If you were to refer us what would you say?⠀
What would you Google to find a service/product like ours?⠀
