Most marketing services and CEOs don’t know marketing strategy

--

Had a prospective client meeting where the CEO of a 1 million-dollar service business admitted he was frustrated that not one marketing firm or consultant he encountered could understand what he meant by needing a “marketing strategy.”

He wanted to take a more strategic and process approach to marketing, develop systems, narrow their market focus, organize their outdated marketing materials, target a segment of their existing clients with a new service, and fine-tune their messaging.

I explained that a lot of people use the term “marketing strategy,” when what they’re really talking about is a list of marketing tactics.

Unfortunately, most people don’t understand strategy is not just a LinkedIn post or a Google AdWords campaign or blog posts. Those are the tactics you use to execute your strategy.

If you don’t have a larger strategy to guide you, then you’re just going to be guessing about what tactics you should be using as part of your marketing efforts.
